| | About | | I was born in Scotland's historic and beautiful capital, Edinburgh. I have particularly strong childhood memories of being enthralled by the striking architecture in this great city; from the cobbles and wynds of the ancient Royal Mile and environs, to my early school days nestled in the serene and magnificent building that in those days housed John Watson's School, now The Gallery of Modern Art.
I have fond memories of my school days not least the sense of being proud to be a part of such evident history. I still derive the same thrill to this day walking in the Edinburgh Streets, and noticing stone steps worn down by countless footsteps. My thoughts stray as to who might have contributed to the erosion and how the city would have looked through their eyes. I feel privileged, now, to be making my own marks. Amongst my favourite areas of Edinburgh are the stunning Dean Village, Stockbridge and woodlands of the Water of Leith, as well as the quietly modest and magical Drummond Gardens.
My inspiration, above all, comes from the tiny gems of nature; the blooms that lurk hidden in dark corners, or the leaves that sprout unplanned from cracks in stone walls that always catch my eye. I believe in the smallest of things it is possible to appreciate everything in the World and beyond. The same message can be learnt from rows of giant Oaks in verdant forests, or from a single leaf curled up on the ground in its faded Autumnal hues. I have made it my mission to take the tiny specimens, and paint them with enough presence to sing out their songs and celebrate their energy. The balancing of light and dark is very important to me in my work and this is what makes my pieces talk. When contrasted with my dark backgrounds and shadows, the highlights shine even more brightly. I think this is a message we can take into our lives. No matter how bleak a situation or problem may appear the light will always resolve. I feel my paintings convey my devotion to the spiritual side of life and the daily magic that surrounds us all. I hope that in some way my art lifts and inspires. | | |
